Alumroot

Heuchera americana

The wild ancestor of the common garden plant "Coral Bells," this inconspicuous plant bears its small, green flowers on tall stems reaching above the foliage, which remains within 12 inches of the ground.  The flowers find their only touch of color in the small orange anthers, the tips of which extend from the bells.

Spring (May-June).

The green leaves of Alumroot are of the same form as those of the many hybridized cultivars of Heuchera, often bred for their brightly colored foliage.   The flowering wands are scarcely noticeable above the leaves.
