Winter Cress
Barbarea vulgaris
This plant bolts early in spring with heavy heads of four-petaled, bright yellow flowers typical of the mustard family. Stems and leaves are smooth. Distinctive are the leaves: lower leaves are compound, with a large rounded central/end lobe and smaller rounded lobes pinnately arranged farther down the stem (up to 3 or 4 pairs). HIgh on the stem are broad, shallowly toothed leaves that are clasping the stem (photo at left).
