Purple Giant Hyssop

Agastache scrophulariaefolia

Flower heads, sometimes up to 6 inches or more in length, contain many closely-packed buds that open irregularly over time. The flowers are tubular, about 1/2 inch long, and can be purple, pink, or almost completely white; however, the four protruding stamens end in a small pink tip. (Compare with Yellow Giant Hyssop, A. nepetoides.) Stems are large and square (mint family), with fine hairs along the angles of the stems. Most authorities give 6 feet/2 meters as the maximum height of this plant, but the speciments in Jackson Park are often 7 or even 8 feet tall. Leaves are ovate-pointed, opposite in pairs, up to 5 inches in length, with saw-like edges.

Summer (June-September).
