Western Ironweed
Vernonia fasciculata
Tight clusters of purple flowers. Stem and leaves smooth; leaves long (up to 9 inches), relatively narrow (2 inches or less), toothed on margins, very acute toward tip, on short or no stalk.
Shorter, blooming earlier, and in sunnier habitat than Tall Ironweed. However, Ironweeds (of which several species occur in the Chicago area hybridize, creating intermediate forms identification of which is problematic.
