English Plantain

Plantago lanceolata

English Plantain forms a basal rosette consisting of narrow, lanceolate leaves only about 1/2 inch wide and up to 9 inches long. (In the photo at left hard to see--strawberry leaves are prominent.) From this rosette rise long, very thin stems, at the top of which is a cylindrical spike of tiny flowers, usually about 1-1/2 inches long and 1/4 inch wide, but sometimes larger. From the tiny flowers emerge stamens with white anthers on fine threads, giving the heads a fuzzy look.

1-2 feet, sun - partial sun.
