Rosinweed
Silphium integrifolium
This native prairie species sends up tall, stiff stems with stiff, rough, ovate, pointed leaves marching up the stems in opposite pairs and without petioles (sessile). Pairs of leaves are often oriented at 90 degrees from the preceding and following pair. The stems branch near the top to support several clusters of heavy buds that open as yellow composite flowers about 3 inches across.

Summer (July-August).
The flowers open from large, lumpy buds.
