Common Strawberry

Fragaria virginiana

The wild relative of cultivated strawberries, the leaves (usually in threes) are ovate, toothed, and prominently veined. Leaves and stems are fuzzy or hairy. Flowers, in clusters on stalks separate from the leaves, are about 3/4 inch across and have five rounded white petals and a yellow center. The fruit, usually 1/2 inch long or less, is the familiar red with seeds embedded, and often forms hidden by the leaves.
