Tall Sunflower (Giant Sunflower)

Helianthus giganteus

The stems of this towering plant (see photo below) are rough, and reddish-purple tending to green. The leaves are lance-shaped, narrow, sessile (unstalked) or nearly so, rough-surfaced, and entire (untoothed); they may be up to 8 inches long, seldom more than 1 inch wide.  The flowers, about 3 inches across, consist of a yellow center of disk florets and dozen or more yellow ray florets.

Most easily distinguished from other sunflowers by the narrow leaves.

4-12 feet, sun.
