Common Blue Violet

Viola sororia sororia

The Common Blue Violet has clusters of heart-shaped leaves from which rise dark blue-violet flowers, each on its own stem and on stems separate from the leaves. The flowers of 5 petals have a white fuzz on the two lateral lower petals, and all three lower petals have strong veining on the white base of the petals.

A white variant of this plant is sometimes called the White Wood Violet V. sororia albiflora, with which it also forms hybrids; see that page, linked above, for these forms.
